About TameTV
TameTV started with a parent of a 7-year-old and a Xiaomi TV where Google's controls didn't work. The goal was to ration YouTube, not remove it.
Why TameTV
The kid would watch YouTube for as long as the TV allowed. Family Link and Google's kids profile weren't available on that TV, and YouTube Kids wasn't something the kid would watch.
Taking YouTube away was never the plan. The plan was a short time for YouTube, longer for Netflix, a cap on the whole day, and a TV that stops at bedtime without an argument.
Plenty of families are in the same spot. On many Android TVs, Google's kids profiles and Family Link are missing, or only work in some countries.
What we believe
- The kid isn't the enemy. Lock screens are friendly and say plainly when the TV unlocks again.
- Be honest about limits. Every guide says what already works without TameTV, and a TV stays "Expected" until we've tested it.
- Count time, nothing more. TameTV counts time per app and doesn't record what's on screen.
- Don't nag the adults either. Parents get their own profile with no limits, and the PIN only comes up when it's needed.
Where it stands
TameTV is in development. The website and the waitlist come first. The TV app and the parent dashboard follow once enough parents have joined to show it's worth building. Then we'll test on real TVs, starting with Xiaomi, and move each compatibility page from "Expected" to "Tested".
After that: a safe YouTube mode that plays only the channels you approve, and more languages, starting with German, Ukrainian and Polish.
